It sounds like Sting will retire in 2023 after his AEW contract expires

Sting recently announced that he is planning to retire from professional wrestling.

During an interview with D Magazine, the 63-year-old AEW star made it clear that he’s trying to find the perfect ending to ride into the sunset on a high note. In a way, it sounds awfully similar to Undertaker’s Last Ride in WWE.

According to the publication, the end of Sting’s legendary career will take place in 2023. His contract expires sometime this year, and he’ll be stepping down after that:

“[Sting] will not rest. Not yet. He’s chasing the one thing that always eludes him in his wrestling twilight: a final act. The right accomplishment to crown a successful career. One moment, one action—some-built up with his bosses at AEW to bring him fulfillment. And until he does, he will push harder than any wrestler his age has ever done.”

“…since [Sting] After returning to the ring in March 2021 after a five-and-a-half year hiatus, he has upped the ante, constantly testing the limits of what his sixty-year-old body can endure. Intellectually he accepts the concessions he has to make to age: a lower place in the corporate hierarchy, the end of the exhausting one-on-one competition. It doesn’t help him sleep better on the nights after wrestling when he’s replaying sequences in his head and poking around at the weak spots in his performance.”

“His wife is worried. Some of his friends too. But they are also curious. They, too, are wondering how Sting’s story ends…[he] just know it’s coming soon. His contract with AEW expires sometime this year; When exactly, he does not say. When it ends, so does his time behind the face paint.”

“Whatever I do, I want wrestling fans to say, ‘That was amazing,'” he says. “I don’t want them to walk away and say, ‘That was embarrassing.’ I just want it to be a great memory and then finally, once and for all, say Adios.”

Sting admits he thought he had reached the end of the road during a match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in September 2021 when his body refused to move like him during a tag team match with FTR it needed.

It’s worth noting that Sting debuted with AEW on Winter is coming in December 2020, and that’s when he signed a multi-year deal. Does that mean his contract expires in December 2023?

The bottom line is that the clock is ticking for Sting’s pro wrestling career and it sounds like he’ll be retiring this year. Are you ready to say goodbye, Cagesider?
